Golf can be fun no matter how skilled a person may be, but it’s human nature to enjoy something more if you are good and excel at it. Wouldn’t you agree?I know from personal experience that when I play well I feel much more exhilarated than when I have a bad round. Either way I enjoy the challenge of the game and always look forward to return and try to play better the next time. That’s why taking lessons will help you attain your highest level of skill and allow you to enjoy the game much faster than self teaching.

Don’t get me wrong, I self taught as stated earlier, and learning was a real challenge but I enjoyed the ride. So if lessons are not for you right now, for whatever reason, tight budget, time constraints, etc. don’t let the joy of playing golf slip away by giving up. Self teach or learn from a friend or relative, watch video training DVD’s (check ads on this site for some excellent teaching aids) read books on golf like I did, but whatever you do don’t give up. You will be missing out on one of the greatest games ever devised by man.

There are many options to take golf lessons and the most important thing you can do is to select an instructor or teaching professional who is patient and doesn’t mind working with a new golfer. Some teachers may be very good but do not have the patience and fortitude required for the beginner. I would suggest to get a recommendation from someone who plays, if possible, or interview the proposed teacher and explain that you are a new golfer and get a feel or reaction if they will be right for you.

I actually did take a lesson or two a few years after I started playing but I was very disappointed with the teacher. All he did was watch me swing and say “OK that looks good”, no recommendations or advice on grip, set-up, tempo, timing, swingpath, repetitive swing thoughts, relaxing techniques, grip pressure - NOTHING and for that reason I was soured on lessons for quite a time.

I have to admit that I changed my mind when I saw some good pros in action so please don’t let my experience sour you on the idea. I was at the local Golfsmith store about a year ago and I noted they had a supplementary section of the store just for lessons and practice. I was a bit unhappy with my game as of late and I wondered if they might be able to help. I bit the bullet so to speak and enrolled in a series of lessons for about $700.This included about ten sessions with the pro, including Video monitoring and playback, so you could see your swing in action. He was able to point out my swing deficiencies and I had direction of what I needed to correct in order to get back on track. Since you cannot see your own swing it is difficult to correct a swing fault by yourself. A good tool to use to practice is a mirror where you can stop and look at your swing during each step of the way, but you first need to learn the proper basics or you still won’t know what you are doing right or wrong in your reflection.

A new player should minimally take a series of ten or even 20 lessons and schedule a monitored practice (which Golfsmith and some other golf schools offer ) to really put you on the right track to play. Your instructor will be able to rate your progress and you will see the results yourself as you begin to play. How quickly you improve will be the determining factor as to how many lessons an individual may need. If money is no object there are some excellent resorts that offer Instruction and Playing Packages.

These can also be found on http://www.golfdigest.com and many are built around some of the finest vacation spots in the world. For the tighter budget but still opting for a lesson or two, try the local pro golf shop or resident driving range instructor. Remember to ask them if they are experienced in teaching the beginner and let them know that this is your requirement. Happy Golfing!

Being a good golfer results from a lot more than your final score. It’s about your skill, knowledge of the game, athletic ability, understanding of golf etiquette, and sportsmanship on the green.

There are three key areas of study that will take you from a mediocre golf player to a great one. They are athletic ability, skill and etiquette. Keep reading to learn the fundamentals of these golf elements along with a few tips on how to improve.

Athletic Ability

Admittedly, golf is a low-impact sport - some don’t even regard golf as a sport - but it still requires a healthy amount of walking, the strength needed to hit the ball a lengthy distance and your ability to stay focused during a round.

Though a surprise to many, the better shape you’re in, the better your golf game will be. Golf may seem like a simple game, but it requires more exertion than is apparent on the surface. Spending several hours on the course during the heat of the day to play 18 holes takes its toll.

Brisk walks or work around the house are great ways to maintain and improve your cardiovascular health. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, you’ll see your golf game improve noticeably.

Another two facets of health and fitness that are critical to a game like golf are mental sharpness and vision. For example, if your game has been inexplicably becoming progressively worse, try having your eyes checked. And while on the course preparing for a shot, practice focussing on each shot rather than letting your mind wander.

Skill

Like most sports, the key to skill development in golf is practice. By setting and adhering to a regular practice schedule, you’re setting yourself up for success.

If you don’t have the funds or time to indulge in multiple rounds of golf every week, opt instead for a trip to the driving range or an afternoon spent practicing shots with your putter.

Perhaps you can’t afford individual training with a golf pro. However, you may be able to split the cost with training in group sessions. At a minimum, you can certainly purchase a recording of golf tips to learn from those who train others.

Balance your practice with ongoing education about the game. Remember, golf is as much about strategy as it is about ability, so read the occasional golf magazine, watch an instructional video, take a lesson or even just stop by the pro shop occasionally to check out new technologies.

Etiquette

One of the most important, yet most often overlooked, facets of golf is golf course etiquette. How you behave on the green reflects on your understanding of the game as well as you as a person.

Golf can be a solitary sport, but it’s often played competitively and because it’s a gentlemen’s sport, good sportsmanship is key. A great golf player is quiet when others are lining up a shot, allows faster players to play through and always has respect for his fellow players.

Golf can also at times seem to be a game that torments and teases when your shots don’t go as intended. These are the instances when keeping your cool is much better than expressing frustration through foul language or - worse - slamming or throwing golf equipment.

These days there are a rising number of people who are getting into gold for the first time. If you’ve been a golfer for quite some time now, you might be looking back and remembering just how frustrating it was working on that swing and simply playing good. If you’re just a beginner however, it might seem daunting at first. All it takes is some practice, and more practice!

Golf to many is a great way to relax, spend the weekend and enjoy nature. You do have to reach a certain level of proficiency in the game to fully enjoy it though, which makes it all the more challenging and interesting in the first place. There are many books on golf available, however, there is not much in the shelves today that focus on golf for beginners. So as an alternative, you may want to look into schools, which often provide and introductory class that lasts up to 4 hours and costs about 300 bucks. Still, some beginners choose to practice on their own or with their friends once they feel that they’ve already got all the basic knowledge they need.

It can’t be stressed enough though that you need to establish your knowledge in the basics first and foremost. It is well known that those who play rounds of golf too soon in their development end up with such a bad experience that can prompt them to quit golf for good! There really is no shorter way to learning golf. Take the time to enjoy your learning progress. Golf is something you need to practice and practice until you are perfect. A repetition of the swing and some accumulated skills will aid in the development of your game.

What To Expect

As a beginner, know that the competitor is only your own self. Yes, golf is a hard game to play especially if you’re a beginner, expect to be utilizing both your body and mind to manage all the potential results your hit could make. Furthermore, expect the sport to require lots of patience from you. Other sports may require you to just “go and do it.” Golf, on the other hand, will require you to start at square one and stay there for maybe a couple of months or more. In fact you may need much more time than you could ever expect. Many golfers would tell you though that that is the beauty of the game—you’ll be able to concentrate on your own pace until you are ready to progress.

Some Tips

There are just some tips you need before embarking on your new sport. The first tip is to avoid getting the latest golf clubs. As a beginner, you will not be able to take advantage of them anyway. If you’re going to focus on practicing for now, which you should be doing, you can always borrow or purchase some used equipment. This way, you get to save more in the long term plus use equipment that’s appropriate for your current skills.

Next, listen to yourself and only yourself. Your family and friends may start telling you tips that might actually work against you. As mentioned earlier, golf is a sport you develop on your own, at your own pace. Of course, you may ask golf pros for some advice, as they will often teach you how to avoid bad habits that could lead to bad hits.

Finally, enjoy the game as much as possible! Don’t think of it as an obstacle, but a challenge. Enthusiasts love golf mainly because it is challenging. If you get frustrated and discouraged easily, you may easily quit the sport that many others are truly enjoying.

A great place to practice your golfing skills is at the driving range. Practicing here will of course save you a lot of the embarrassment, as everyone else will be just be hitting a bucket of balls just like you. You can practice putting in your own room or backyard (advised not to used real balls unless you want to risk damaging your neighbor’s windows). To play, par-3 course are great for novices.

Some equipment you’ll need for gold include golf clubs, a bag designed to carry golf clubs, a set of golf balls, and a proper attire for golf. You may ask for some assistance at the shop when it comes to choosing the types of golf clubs and golf balls you might need. A good golf attire would be something light and comfortable, like a shirt or blouse that allows more movement for you to swing comfortably. Shoes should have soft spikes underneath and comfortable. And of course, sunscreen and a cap or hat are advisable, as you will be out under the sun probably the whole day!

Most golfers will admit that golf is 90% mental, yet most spend all their time and efforts on the mechanical aspect of the game. The golfing industry hasn’t helped the trend by breaking down the swing and analyzing each of its components. Although, the average handicap for club players is still the same as it was 20 years ago. Even with all the new technology in equipment and video analysis.

Everyone seems to be teaching or learning the perfect swing, but little do people realize that almost no one has a perfect swing, not even the pros. Each of us has a certain way of swinging the club, even if we are taught the correct way in the beginning. Negative feelings have a lot to do with our swing. If you have a good swing, and negative thoughts, you still will not play good golf.

Most players are distracted and not totally concentrating on their shot at one time or another. Each time this happens, you can lose a stroke or two. If this happens only 4-5 times a round, it could add a lot of strokes to your score.

The main principles behind good golf are simple. You must be able to focus on the task at hand and stay in the present, then pick a small target and empty all unwanted thoughts from your mind.

The mental aspect of executing a shot is crucial to our success. Think about all the good shots you hit when you are practicing, when not on the course. Why do you play bad one day and not the next, why do you play well on the front nine but terrible on the back nine? Your physical ability is the same. The fact is your mind and body are connected and work in symbiosis, so how you think will affect how you perform.

Evidently, the mind is a critical determinant in shot making. Hypnosis, specifically self-hypnosis in this case, can assist in achieving the right mind set for a golf shot.

All of us use hypnosis in our everyday lives all of the time. If you are overweight and overeat, you can become satisfied with smaller portions of food. If you smoke, you can become an ex-smoker. If you’re a phobic, your fears can disappear completely.

So you see, in an open state of mind, you can make strong, positive suggestions to change your life dramatically. Hypnosis can also help you improve your golf game. It can help you lower your score and feel proud of your accomplishment and your game.

Your inner mind is lazy: It needs repetition for change to occur. The more detailed your picture, the more accurate your outcome. If you expect a positive outcome, you will often receive it.

To create self-hypnosis on command and through suggestion, you need to product strong mental images of what you want to accomplish, you can lower your golf score. You can achieve that score you always dream about. No more being embarrassed of your score in front of your friends.

In the movie, ‘Caddyshack,’ before they swung, golfers repeated the mantra, ‘Be the Ball.’ This is OK for a funny movie or if you’re a beginning golfer who’s likely to miss the ball if you don’t pay supreme attention to it. But for anyone else it’s ridiculous.

Because you’re better than that. You don’t want to just hit the ball. You want the ball to go someplace. Like…a Target. It would be much better for you to ‘Be the Target.’ Focus intensely on the Target. Picture your ball going to it. Have it so burned into your mind that you can still see it in your mind’s eye when you’re addressing the ball. That’s self-hypnosis.

Watch the pre-shot routine of any good golf professional. What do you think they’re doing when they stand in back of the ball, in line with the target? They’re picturing the ball flying to the Target.

Want to improve your golf score? Before every shot, make the Target your image.

Get the picture?

Getting the good golf basics for beginners should always be a fun and rewarding experience. Trying to find the tried and true information on the internet can be somewhat of a struggle, though. Most people will end up trying random golfing techniques that might or might not work. Well, here is a tip to help you find the golf basics for beginners that have truly worked for others.

If you are like most golfers, you have spent your fair share of time looking for techniques through search engines. While this is a fantastic way to find tons of information, it’s impossible to sift through and find the ones that are truly worth your time. It gets even tougher because some men and women will even start trying random tips that they find in these search results and most won’t work for their particular game.

There is an alternative way to find the golf basics for beginners that really do work, though. I remember finding out about golfing forums about four years ago. They helped me out tremendously in the past and I still use them to this day when I am looking for small ways to tweak parts of my game. Golfing forums are filled with veterans who have already found the golf basics for beginners that work and their always share their knowledge inside of these forums.

The mental check off list associated with the typical golf swing setup is far too long. Most amateurs worry about too many factors rather than following a few short steps. The following two easy steps will help you get in the proper golf swing setup each time you step up to the ball.

This setup routine can be broken down into smaller steps. But in essence it has two basic parts. Here are the steps for right-handed golfers.

One, step up to the ball with your weight on your right foot. And two, tilt your back shoulder down slightly.

Step 1: Take Your Stance By Leaning Forward On One Foot

After gripping the club, place it behind the ball. Next, place your right foot behind the ball and put all your weight on it. Your left foot lags behind and offers balance.

This position forces you into a comfortable distance from the ball. Too close and you feel the club pushing into your gut. Too far and you are reaching for the club.

Your Arms Should Hang Straight Down

A second check is the location of your arms. Once you have established the proper distance from the ball your arms will hang straight down. Gravity helps put them into the proper position. Do not force them closer to your body or away from your body.

Look Downrange While Placing Your Feet

Turn your head to look downrange as you place your feet. Taking your stance in this manner engages more of your senses. It dynamically helps you to square up to the target.

Shift your weight back and forth while you are looking at the target. Feel the bottoms of your feet making contact with the ground. Focus on the balls of your feet, or the front two-thirds of the foot.

Step Two: Tilt Slightly to the Right

By tilting your right shoulder down it does three things. First, it places a little more weight on the right leg, preparing it for the back swing.

Second, it aligns the right hand in the proper position on the club. The right hand fills a lower position naturally because the right shoulder is now lower.

Third, this slight tilt helps the alignment of your shoulders, arms, and feet to be on the same path to the target.

For a video demonstration of the above steps, click on the link below.

By following the golf swing setup steps in the video you will find yourself playing more often in the fairway and hitting the ball farther.
